Vladivostok, Russia – (AfricaNewswire.net) — Igor Sechin, Chief Executive Officer of Rosneft, delivered a report at the opening of the 8th Russian-Chinese Energy Business Forum on September 4, highlighting China’s experience in developing energy storage systems and electricity grid infrastructure as being of particular interest to African countries.
China commissioned 162 GWh of new battery energy storage capacity in 2026, accounting for around half of the global total and 3.5 times the capacity commissioned in the United States, Sechin said.
According to Sechin, this volume would be sufficient to charge 3 million electric vehicles at once.
Energy storage plays an important role in providing flexibility to power systems, Sechin noted. At the same time, China is actively developing its electricity grid infrastructure.
Annual investment in China’s electricity grid infrastructure amounts to around $100 billion, representing approximately one-fifth of global investment. The total length of China’s main electricity transmission lines has reached 1.6 million kilometres, exceeding the combined figure for the United States, the European Union and India.
China is also developing an approach to the allocation of energy resources and computing capacity. In particular, data centres are planned to be located in regions rich in new energy resources, while data centres are also being encouraged to enter into long-term electricity purchase agreements.
According to Sechin, this approach makes it possible to optimise the investment burden on power generation.
For African countries seeking to pursue industrialisation and sustainable development, China’s experience in energy storage and the development of flexible energy systems could provide a useful reference. China’s annual energy investment of around $100 billion and its development of flexible energy systems offer an example for countries looking to expand their energy infrastructure alongside economic growth.
